What "Made to Order" Actually Means (and Why Nothing Is in Stock)
2026-09-20 · by Lumi atelier · Fujian, China
"Made to order" appears on a lot of handmade listings. It is worth spelling out exactly what it means here, because it changes how you should plan a gift, and it explains something that confuses people: we never show stock levels, because there is no stock.
Nothing sits on a shelf waiting
When you place an order, your piece does not exist yet. A maker in our studio in Fujian starts it after your order is confirmed, works through the queue in the order it was received, and finishes it before it is packed.
That has one obvious cost — you wait — and two less obvious benefits:
- Your colour choices are real. You are not picking from what happens to be left. If you want a particular green, it gets made in that green.
- Nothing has been sitting in a warehouse. Fibre that has been boxed for a year does not look like fibre that was shaped this week.
The actual timelines
| Product | Usual lead time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pipe cleaner dragons | Around 3 days | Made in sequence; overseas orders prioritised |
| Knitted animal-ear hats | Around 5 days | Knitting and finishing takes longer than shaping |
These are working estimates, not guarantees. Public holidays add time, and a complicated custom colourway can add a day. If you are working to a fixed date — a birthday, a shop opening — tell us the date when you order and we will tell you honestly whether it is achievable.
Overseas orders are prioritised. If you are ordering from outside China, you move ahead in the queue rather than behind.
What happens between your order and your parcel
- Order received and confirmed. We check the colourway and any custom requests with you.
- Making. Dragons around 3 days, hats around 5 days.
- Photos before shipping. We photograph the finished piece and send it to you for confirmation.
- Packing. Reinforced for the longer dragon tiers so the body cannot be crushed.
- Dispatch. Tracked, with the carrier details sent to you.
The photo step is the one people appreciate most. You see the exact piece you are getting before it leaves, and if something is not right it is far easier to fix here than to sort out after it has crossed an ocean.
Why there are no returns on handmade items
Our listings say handmade items are not eligible for return or exchange, and that is not us being difficult. A piece made to your colour specification has no resale value to anyone else — it cannot go back on a shelf.
What that does not mean is that you are unprotected:
- You approve photos before it ships.
- If it arrives damaged in transit, contact us and we will resolve it.
- If the piece is not what you approved in the photos, tell us.
Damage and mistakes get fixed. A change of mind after a custom piece has been made is the one thing that cannot be.
Planning around the wait
A few practical notes for anyone ordering against a calendar:
- Gifts. Work backwards from the date. For a hat, allow the making time plus shipping, and add a buffer for the photo approval step — if you are slow to reply, the parcel waits.
- Retail and wholesale. Tell us your sell-by or launch date up front. Larger orders are scheduled as a batch rather than made one at a time.
- Events. The longest dragon tier is the piece people order for displays. Order early, because it is also the slowest to make and the most awkward to pack.

Frequently asked questions
Why can't I see stock levels?
Because there is no stock. Every piece is made after you order it.
How long will my order take?
Around 3 days for dragons, around 5 days for hats, plus shipping. Overseas orders are prioritised.
Do I get to see it before it ships?
Yes. We photograph the finished piece and send the photos for your confirmation before dispatch.
What if I need it by a specific date?
Tell us the date when you order. We will tell you straight away whether it is realistic.
Can I change my order after it goes into production?
Colour changes are usually fine in the first day. After that the piece is already shaped, so it depends where it is in the process — ask us and we will tell you honestly.
