What to Buy for Someone Who Has Everything (A Handmade Gift Guide)

The hardest person to buy for isn't the picky one. It's the one who already owns everything. You can't win by finding something they need, because they don't need anything — and you can't win by spending more, because they can buy it themselves.

That's the real reason handmade works on this person. Not because it's craft-y or rustic, but because a made-to-order piece is the one category of gift they genuinely cannot go out and get for themselves.

Why "has everything" is a broken shopping brief

Most gift advice tells you to narrow by category: a kitchen person, a tech person, a book person. That fails here, because this person's categories are already full. Whatever you land on, they either own it or own a better version.

The making time is not a delay we apologise for. It's the product. Nothing here sits in a box waiting to be bought.

Order earlier than you think

This is the mistake that costs people the most. A made-to-order gift has two clocks running — the making, and the shipping — and they don't overlap.

Roughly: about 3 days for a dragon, about 5 for a hat, then packing and transit on top. Overseas orders are prioritised, and we'll tell you the estimated completion date once your order is in. If you're buying for a fixed date, tell us the date first — that's the fastest way to find out if it's possible.

Five checks before you order handmade from anyone

Whoever you buy from, these five questions will tell you whether you're getting handmade or just handmade-flavoured.

1. Can I change the colour or size? A real maker can. A reseller can't.
2. Will you show me the piece before it ships? We photograph or film every finished piece and send it for approval first.
3. How long does it take, specifically? "Fast shipping" usually means it was already made.
4. What happens if it arrives damaged? Get this in writing before paying.
5. Can I talk to the person making it? We answer messages ourselves, in English, Chinese and Japanese.

Question 2 is the one most buyers skip and the one that saves the most disappointment.
