Pipe Cleaner Dragon Sizes Explained: How to Choose the Right One

Every pipe cleaner dragon we make is built from the same technique — a wire core wrapped in chenille, shaped segment by segment by hand. What changes between the four price tiers ($159, $189, $239 and $299) is length: more body segments, more shaping time, more material.

That sounds simple, but "how long is it?" is the question we get asked most, and it is worth being honest about the answer.

Why we price by length instead of by centimetre

A hand-shaped dragon does not come off a mould. Two dragons in the same tier will not be identical to the millimetre, because the curve of a body segment depends on how the maker's hands move that day. Pricing by length tier rather than by a printed dimension means you are paying for the work, not for a number that cannot be repeated exactly.

What the tiers reliably tell you:

If you need an exact measurement — because it has to sit inside a shelf opening, or fit a display case — message us before ordering. We will send the measurements of the piece currently on the bench.

Choosing by where it will live

On a desk. The shortest tier is almost always right. A dragon that shares a desk with a keyboard and a monitor needs to stay compact, and the shorter body reads clearly at arm's length.

On a shelf. Go one tier up. Shelves are viewed from further away and slightly below eye level, so the extra length is what makes the silhouette legible.

As a gift. Match the tier to the person, not the price. For someone who has never owned handmade craft, the $159 piece is a genuine introduction and not a compromise. For someone who already collects, the longer tiers are the ones that get talked about.

As a centrepiece. The longest tier, without question. It is the only one built to be seen from across a room.

What does not change between tiers

How the size affects shipping

This is the part buyers rarely think about until checkout. A pipe cleaner dragon is light but bulky — the material weighs almost nothing, but the shape takes up space. Carriers charge by whichever is greater, actual weight or volumetric weight, and for these pieces volumetric weight usually wins.

In practice:

• The two shorter tiers are the easiest to ship economically.
• From the $239 tier upward, packing volume starts to matter — we reinforce the box so the body cannot be crushed.
• If you are ordering more than one, shipping them together is usually cheaper per piece than sending them separately.
