A Practical Guide to Giving Handmade Jewellery (Without Guessing the Size)

Handmade jewellery lands well as a gift when four things are right: the size fits, the material is one they already wear, you ordered early enough for a made-to-order piece, and the packaging explains what it is. Miss the first two and it sits in a drawer; miss the third and it arrives after the date.

Here is how to get all four right, including how to find someone's size without asking them.

How do I find out their size without asking?

Asking ruins the surprise, and most people do not know their own bracelet or ring size anyway. Three methods, best first:

1. Measure a piece they already wear. Borrow a bracelet or ring while they are not wearing it, measure it, and put it back. For a bracelet, lay it flat and measure the inside circumference from clasp edge to the last bead. For a ring, measure the inside diameter across the middle of the band, or take it to any jeweller — they will size it for free in about ten seconds.
2. Measure a watch. If they wear one, the strap length or which hole they use tells you a usable range.
3. Estimate from build, then build in adjustment. Small-framed adults usually sit near 14–15 cm wrist / ring size 5–6; average near 15–16.5 cm / size 6–7; broad near 17–19 cm / size 8–9. Then order a piece with an extender, or ask for it to be strung slightly long.

If you are still unsure, choose earrings or a pendant. Both remove sizing from the equation entirely, which is why they are the safest handmade gift there is.

Which material should I choose?

Look at what they already wear, and match it. This is far more reliable than guessing at taste.

If you genuinely cannot tell, freshwater pearl and moonstone are the two safest choices. Both are neutral enough to sit beside anything, and both read as considered rather than generic.

How far ahead should I order?

This is the part that catches people out, and it is worth being blunt: a made-to-order piece is not sitting in a warehouse. It is made after you order it.

Work backwards from the date:

• Making time — ask the seller for the current figure. It moves with the queue, and it is longer in the run-up to December.
• Shipping — international tracked delivery is typically one to three weeks depending on destination, and customs processing is not included in that.
• Buffer — a week. Something always takes longer than planned.

As a working rule, order at least five weeks before the date for an international made-to-order gift, and earlier from mid-November onwards. If you have left it late, ask the seller directly what they can still do — often there is a faster option, or a piece already in progress that suits.

Does the packaging matter?

More than people expect. Handmade jewellery arrives without a brand story printed on a card, so the packaging is doing a job that mass-market packaging does not have to do: explaining what this is and why it is worth something.

What to look for:

• A rigid box or a padded pouch. Soft pouches are fine for storage but do not survive being posted.
• Anti-tarnish handling. Silver and plated findings tarnish in transit if they are packed against the wrong materials.
• A note on the material. One line — what the stone is, that it was made by hand, how to care for it. Half of the value of a handmade gift is the recipient knowing it is handmade.
• Separate compartments if you are giving a set, so pieces do not scratch each other in transit.

If the piece is a gift, say so when you order. Sellers will usually pack differently, add a handwritten note, and leave the invoice out of the box.

What should I write on the card?

The thing that makes a handmade gift land is a specific detail rather than a general compliment. Two or three lines:

• What it is and where it came from — "made by hand in a small workshop in Fujian."
• Why you chose it — "the green matched the jumper you wear every winter."
• One practical note — "it is freshwater pearl, wipe it after wearing."

Avoid "hope you like it." It signals that you are not sure.

What if they want to exchange it?

Ask before you order, not after. Three questions worth putting to any seller:

1. What is the returns window, and who pays return shipping?
2. Can a made-to-order piece be returned at all, or only exchanged?
3. Can it be resized instead of returned?

Resizing is nearly always the better outcome for both sides. A bracelet that is 1 cm too long is a five-minute fix for the maker and a non-event for you, whereas a return means the piece is remade or scrapped.

Keep the packaging if there is any chance of a return, and keep the order confirmation with the size you gave — if the piece was made to a measurement you supplied, that number is what settles any disagreement.

Is handmade jewellery a good gift for someone who has everything?

It is one of the better options, for a specific reason: the piece does not exist anywhere else, so it cannot be compared to something they already own or found online. That removes the quiet failure mode of giving a well-known brand — the recipient knowing exactly what it cost.

The risk is taste, not price. Reduce it by staying neutral in material, keeping the piece small, and making sure it fits.
